NEGOTIATING POWER

Negotiating Power is a physical rebellion – raw, powerful, and vibrant. Fusing contemporary dance, Krump and Visual Vernacular the piece creates a vivid performance about the negotiation and reflection of power relations. The gripping and authentic dance piece deals with different forms of discrimination embedded in our everyday interactions and often unconsciously repeated.

The performance confronts social inequalities without accusation. It invites us all to question our own perceptions and attributions while envisioning a sense of solidarity.
Inspired by Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed, the real experiences of discrimination encountered by our core artistic team due to skin colour, sexuality and gender, flow into the creative process and form the basis of the dance theatre performance.

The production is accompanied by laboratories that actively involve teenagers and young adults in the creation of the piece. In this way, Negotiating Power becomes a collective search for transformation.

Accessibility for DGS Users

The dance theatre piece is also designed for deaf audiences.
Indika Sandaruwan is a visual vernacular artist and poet. He provides artistic support for the piece and performs as the fourth actor on stage during the accessible evenings.

In addition, german sign language interpreters will be on site before and after the performance to facilitate communication.

In 2026 we will continue the project. It keeps being a struggle to collect sufficient money to finaciate the sign language interpreters. Support us with a donation to help cover the costs of sign language interpreters.

LABORATORY // WORKSHOPS

PLAYING POWER

How does power and powerlessness affect our everyday lives? What do we do when we experience or witness injustice? How can we use our bodies and movement to change our behavioural patterns?

With Negotiating Power, Nona Siepmann creates a performance that includes not only a stimulating dance performance but also participative workshops (laboratories). The aim is to create a space in which the initiated reflections can be translated into practical strategies for everyday life.

By combining contemporary dance, krump and methods from Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed, we pursue a physical translation of individual experiences (of discrimination), act them out through dance, observe them from different perspectives and transform them through different intentions. In changing roles, as victims as well as perpetrators of discrimination, participants explore their own scope for action and power.

Weclome to participate is anyone aged 14 and older who is interested in dance and the topics addressed. No previous experience is necessary – just a desire to move, exchange ideas and playfully explore perspectives.
For people under the age of 18, a completed declaration of consent from a legal guardian is required for participation.

The laboratories are led by Nona Siepmann (choreographer), Raphaëlle Sablic (contemporary), Joan Bello Montero aka Keops (krump) and Maëlle Omnes aka Killa One Shot (contemporary + krump).

Team

Artistic Director | Nona Siepmann

has been working as a freelance contemporary dancer, choreographer and dance teacher since graduating as a dance teacher from the ArtEZ University of the Arts in Arnhem (NL). She is particularly interested in exchanges with artists from other disciplines, exploring collaborative methodologies and engaging artistically with socio-political issues. In France, she works with choreographer David Drouard, who is known for his collaboration with hip-hop and krump dancers. In 2021, Maëlle began integrating the urban dance style Krump into her movement language with members of the Titans Crew and aims to make Krump visible in contemporary stage dance in her work. In 2024, she was accepted into the OneShot family and now goes by the name Killa OneShot.

Dancer | Raphaëlle Sablic

is a contemporary dancer from France. She initially trained at the Ballet du Nord in Lille, France, before attending La Manufacture in Aurillac. After completing her studies at Varium in Barcelona, she joined the FRE3BODIES company for two years. This has not only expanded his knowledge and skills as a dancer and choreographer, but also given him expertise in an astonishing range of different dance styles. He has been particularly influenced by Krump, for whose spread and recognition in Europe he is largely responsible. As one of the pioneers of this urban dance style, he has had a lasting influence on the European Krump scene and made the art form accessible to a wider audience. In 2008, Kwame founded the ‘European Buck Session’ (EBS) event, which is now considered the world championship in Krump dance style. Today, Kwame Osei works as a choreographer, event organiser and artistic director of Urban Arts in Oberhausen.

Videodokumentation | Soula Films - Valerie-Marlin Schmid & Hildegard Oehler

Soula Films is a female-led production studio founded by Valerie-Malin Schmid and Hildegard Oehler. They develop documentaries and digital narratives at the intersection of culture, dance, and community. In their work, they let bodies speak: movement becomes narration, and the camera becomes a partner in space. With a collaborative approach and an international network, they accompany processes, create sensitive portraits, and translate multifaceted perspectives into precise visual language. They document NEGOTIATING POWER: artistic practice, audience dialogue, and the energy of Krump in interplay with Contemporary.
